Curriculum Vitae & Resumes

Build your curriculum vitae (CV): Many scholarship applications require you to submit a CV or resume. Your CV or resume provides an overview of your qualifications, past experiences, and ways you are building foundations in certain areas. If given the option, we recommend that you submit a CV because it will allow you to include a comprehensive overview and reflection of your experiences, activities, and accomplishments.

CVs vs Resumes, what’s the difference? CVs tend to be used in academic settings, while resumes are more often used in professional settings. CVs and resumes may be general or tailored toward a particular opportunity. Consider developing a more detailed CV which includes all of your activities, then adapting that version to create a CV tailored to a particular application.

Step-by-step tips for building your CV:

  1. Brainstorm all your college-level activities that showcase your range of interests, involvement, and achievements. Include everything you’ve spent significant time on: research, volunteering, student leadership, club extracurricular activities, presentations, academic-related papers, and school or personal projects.
  2. Strategically organize and articulate impactful experiences and examples that represent you the best.
  3. Highlight accomplishments that directly reflect the values and selection criteria of the opportunity you are applying for.
  4. Use active words and eliminate vague details or sections to maximize the effect.
  5. Utilize tools such as UW Career Center’s resume writing resources & helpful CV & resume samples.
