Timelines
Although there are always exceptions, this general timeline will be helpful for planning ahead and put you on track to meet deadlines!
12-15 months in advance of when you hope to have funding start
- Research your options. Search the OMSFA Scholarship Database or other funding opportunities on your departmental website and other scholarship resources.
- Meet with an OMSFA Advisor by booking an advising appointment.
- Find opportunities through the OMSFA Newsletter or Instagram.
6-12 months in advance
Expect deadlines for funding for the following year
September - January: national & international scholarship deadline season
- Attend application info sessions hosted by the organization/foundation, which will be posted on their website. OMSFA also offers info sessions for scholarships we work closely with.
- Reach out to an advisor at OMSFA for advising and application support.
January - May: UW academic department deadline season
- Research scholarship opportunities on your department's website and confirm with your academic advisor about availability and deadlines.
January - June: local scholarship deadline season
- Local scholarships around Seattle, around the state of Washington and your home town or home state
At least 2 months ahead of the deadline
- Applications tend to open.
- Start learning, drafting, asking for recommendation letters, getting feedback, etc.
- Share your drafts with your mentors, professors, and recommenders so they can give feedback and support your scholarship goals more specifically.
- Attend an OMSFA writing workshop or info session.
- Schedule a scholarship advising appointment with OMSFA.
- Use the writing supports available from CLUE, at the Odegaard Writing and Research Center, the Instructional Center, or departmental writing centers.
Final month ahead of the deadline
- Receive final edits and feedback from an advisor.
- Remind and receive letters of recommendation from mentors/professors at least 1 week before deadline.
- Submit application at least 1-2 days before deadline to avoid upload or application system errors.
- Thank your letters of recommendation writers and advisors.
