Graduate studies

Many of the scholarships our office works closely with provide support for next steps beyond undergraduate study, including continuing your education into graduate-level studies.

Graduate degrees include master's (Master of Science or MS/MSc, Master of Arts or MA, Master of Philosophy or MPhil) and doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy or DPhil or PhD) programs, as well as professional degrees like Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Juris Doctor (JD or professional law degree), Masters of Public Health (MPH), and Masters of Business Administration (MBA). The names and acronyms can be different in different countries and at different schools.

Considering graduate school, whether in the US or abroad, is a big step to prepare for several years in advance. Your undergraduate studies, research, community experiences, work experiences and mentors help you prepare academically and professionally. Giving yourself the chance to prepare financially is also important, and searching for scholarships are one element of that financial preparation.

Some scholarships that fund graduate school may provide one year of support, support for the full duration of the program, provide a tuition waiver and/or a living stipend, or support for a grad-level course. There is a lot of variation, and it takes time to do your research to know which programs align with your interests and goals.

Important points to remember:

  • Plan to apply for admission into graduate programs at least one year in advance of when you want to start graduate school. Some admission processes will be even earlier.
  • Plan to apply for scholarships BEFORE you've been admitted to any graduate program. Be prepared meet scholarship application deadlines that are 1.5 years in advance of when you want to start graduate school, and several months earlier than your graduate school admission application deadlines.
  • Look for scholarships from the schools your are applying for admission into AND external scholarships (from organizations, agencies, foundations).
