Loveleen Tripathi
As an aspiring physician-scientist, I am driven to merge the precision of surgery with groundbreaking research to push the boundaries of medicine. This intersection of research, medicine, and community service has shaped every step of my academic journey. Initially, I viewed success as a collection of accolades, but my time at UW taught me that fulfillment comes from pursuing meaningful work that benefits others.
My passion for neuroscience and medicine has led me to a range of impactful roles. Motivated by a desire to connect academic knowledge with real-world impact, I joined the Ferguson Lab, where I lead a project using fiber photometry and chemogenetics to study how fentanyl affects dopamine signaling in the prefrontal cortex. This work deepened my interest in how surgical interventions can modulate neural pathways to treat neurological disorders. During my second year at UW, I began volunteering with Recovery Café, a nonprofit supporting individuals facing addiction and poverty. There, I learned the value of human connection and the importance of bridging social gaps through shared humanity. Being part of someone’s healing process, whether through conversation, support, or simply showing up, was deeply fulfilling and shifted my perspective on care. This experience inspired me to pursue more direct patient interaction, leading me to earn my Certified Nursing Assistant license and begin working at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
These experiences have ignited a passion within me to further my education and pursue an MD/PhD degree, to become a physician-scientist. I envision a career where I can combine the precision and skill of surgery with innovation and leadership in scientific research. This support from the UW Alumni Reunion Scholarships will alleviate some of the financial burdens in this difficult journey and bring me one step closer to achieving my goals and creating lasting, positive change in the world.
Goals
I plan to take the MCAT this upcoming fall while beginning preparations for medical school applications in the spring. Alongside this, I will continue my research, CNA work, and volunteer efforts to stay engaged in the communities and experiences that have shaped my path toward medicine.
