I am from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and I moved to the United States three years ago in search of greater opportunities and a chance to contribute meaningfully to healthcare. As a first-generation college student, I am currently majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Washington. My academic journey began in Cambodia, where I studied medicine for four years. Although I had to restart my education upon arriving in the U.S., I have never seen that as a setback. Instead, it has deepened my commitment to becoming a physician who understands and addresses both global and local healthcare disparities.

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges within Cambodia’s healthcare system—overcrowded hospitals, shortages of trained medical professionals, and a lack of basic care in rural areas. When I arrived in the U.S., I was surprised to see similar patterns of inequality in the Khmer-American community. Many still struggle with limited access to care due to language barriers, cultural gaps, and socioeconomic factors. These experiences reminded me that healthcare inequity is not just a problem back home—it exists here too. That realization pushed me to take action. I joined the Khmer Student Association at UW, where I now serve as Cultural Chair, to help preserve and uplift our community’s identity and voice. I also volunteer with the Khmer Health Board to support health outreach efforts, especially for elders with limited English proficiency. In addition, I serve in the emergency and telemetry departments of a local hospital to gain clinical experience and connect with patients from all backgrounds.

I am applying for the Alumni Scholarship because financial support is essential for sustaining my academic progress while balancing the demands of commuting, volunteering, and student leadership. This scholarship would alleviate my financial strain, enabling me to concentrate more fully on my studies and extracurricular activities, which are crucial for me to uplift the Khmer community and enhance my qualifications for a career in the medical field.

Goals

I plan to continue participating in community health efforts and work on a research project related to molecular biology or clinical research during my senior year at UW. My long-term goal is to attend medical school and become an orthopedic physician, serving communities in need.

Tips

Let someone close to you read your essay—they might notice something meaningful you overlooked. Most importantly, do not give up!
