Truman Scholarship
2026 (UW nominee)
Major: Political Science and International Studies
Pronouns: she/her
Hometown: Allen, TX

I’m a junior studying Political Science and International Studies, and I’m interested in becoming an international human rights lawyer. My academic interests are rooted in law and global politics, but they began in a much more personal place. When I was younger, I wanted to be a chef. Food was how I connected with people. After long days of work, my family would sit around the table every Ramadan to fold samosas and talk about our days, a ritual that became one of my favorite childhood memories. Over time, I came to see food as more than nourishment. It was a way of preserving culture, sharing stories, and holding onto a sense of belonging. Much of my recent work now explores how food intersects with culture and memory, especially in communities shaped by migration or displacement. Thinking about food as a site of connection made me more curious about people themselves, including what shapes their choices, relationships, and histories. That curiosity naturally led me to international relations and international law. I’m fascinated by how culture and history influence the way states interact, and by how those interactions affect individuals on the ground. International law, in particular, showed me how human behavior is structured at a global level and how legal frameworks can either limit harm or create space for cooperation and protection. I’m applying for the Truman Scholarship because helping others has always been what feels most meaningful to me. Some of the moments I’m proudest of come from supporting other people, whether teaching kids about civic engagement, volunteering at food banks, or helping design a daycare program for student parents on campus. Being able to contribute to someone else’s success, even in small ways, has consistently brought me the most joy. The Truman Scholarship would help me pursue a JD and continue building a life in public service. More than anything, I want the tools to show up for people in meaningful ways and use the law to support communities whose voices are too often overlooked.

Goals

My short term goal is to apply to a JD program, so I can pursue international law. However, over the long term, I hope to be a lifelong learner who is always curious and looking for ways to make the world a better place.
